Situated on the banks of the Tigris River, it is the administrative capital of the Diyarbakır Province. It is the third-largest city in Turkey's Southeastern Anatolia Region, after Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep. It has been a focal point of the conflict between the Turkish state and various Kurdish insurgent groups.
