The domain of a villa rustica Gallo-Roman of the i st century Matriniacus centered at the current location of the old Romanesque church, have gradually evolved into town around the stream of Devèze underground today. Among other things, gravel viticulture was already practiced there , and the larger stream served as a transport route to the mouth.
